Composite image or Photomontage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining two or more photographs into an illusion of an unreal subject. Sometimes the resulting composite image is photographed so that a final image may appear as a seamless photographic print. A similar method, although one that does not use film, is realized today through image-editing software. This latter technique is referred to by professionals as “compositing”, and in casual usage is often called, “photoshopping”, due to a particular software often used.
I have always been interested in trying to create composite images combining multiple layers of separate elements into one mindboggling picture. I think it is a sort of a special talent of mine to work out how different elements might fit together using different styles and combining different techniques (matte painting, 3D, photos, miniatures). For the past year I´ve been really lucky to be able to create these images also for various clients and see the impact they have. I feel that even single images can punch hard when there is story behind the picture, and I´m thrilled that companies are also seeing the value of creating images that will stand out and have the “WHOA!” -effect.
The most important thing in creating these images is planning. I have to see the image ready in my mind so that I can figure out the right techniques for each image. I takes a lot of sketching, making mood boards, thinking and planning to make everything go smoothly. I have to know what elements I need to shoot, what images I will find from my own stock images, do I need 3D modelling, matte painting, scale models… whatever is needed to visualise the idea.
I´ve done also few videos how these images are created:

Seems pretty simple eh? It is definitely NOT. Making composites takes a lot of time planning, behind the camera, sitting in front of computer and retouching but I really enjoy the whole process. This is definitely something that I want to specialise in even more in the future. Trying to find new and efficient retouching and photography techniques, trying to find best people to work with and so on. With these composite images everything is possible, just IMAGINE ANYTHING, and we can create it!
I have couple of really big projects on the way and I´m really looking forward to be able to publish the results! I´m also planning to organise a full day workshop on how to create these kind of images .. stay tuned 😀
